Artist's Statement My intention as a painter is to weave a synthesis for present and future social and personal introspection regarding children. My visual vocabulary expresses symbolically our relationship to children using historical and contemporary references. Much of what my work is about is the intrinsic nature of mankind and our evolution of consciousness, especially our view of children. My intention in my creative process is to catch attention by creating a visual dialog that the viewer can intimately identify with. What I want is for my art to act as a "reflection of self" in such a way that it awakens a glimmer of understanding and compassion both for the "child within" and -- by extension -- for children everywhere.
To find
empathy, requires us to reach beyond our differences to a point of
shared
humanity. I want to suggest that we consider beauty as a
transformative
experience that awakens the unconscious and leads us to one
another.
Beauty does not reside in any object but rather in the experience one
has
with it. My challenge as an artist has been to make art that is
aesthetically
beautiful and yet socially meaningful, and my challenge as an activist
has been to make a positive difference for children. This means that I
must go to a place within myself in which my mind sees and understands
the social and political implications that contextualize children's
issues,
binding that with what I feel in my heart, and expressing that vision
through
my art. |
